Hughe banner, Vet bring back with a few questions

    Hello,

I want to post my newest addition, I picked it up from a Vet here in town, even if flags are not my collection focus.

I'm not very good with flags etc... however, it is obvious a H. Youth banner.
It is around 10 feet long, I could not find any hangers or markings on it.

It has some stains and moth nips, however, overall in pretty good shape. The color is still somewhat crisp.

    Where was this banner used?
    How was it hung?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Alex

    Hello Alex:
Interesting big HJ banner. As to how it was used and hung,
that is a good question, as it appears to have been repaired
maybe closing the pole slip end. Without a rope, or end sleeve
IMO it would more likely have been used as a banister drape or
wall decoration, rather than as a actual pole flown flag.

      Hello Oldflagswanted,

      thanks for your reply.
Looking at the ends of one side, it seems like that the fabric was doubled up for reinforcement maybe?

Your idea of "banister drape" sounds like a winner to me.

I've never seen a HJ banner that big, party banners ok, but HJ banners? Well, as mentioned before, I'm not really into flags and banners.....

This banner will have a short life in my collection anyway..... Here the story....

I just went thru a nightmare....

Me, happy as a kid in a candy store, running down into the basement where I keep all my stuff.
I have a 3 foot wide, 6 foot tall cabinet (backside open) in which I keep some helmets and field gear.... I tucked the banner nicely on the backside of the cabinet... basically as a nice background for the stuff inside instead of the boring wall....
Me, running upstairs now....calling the wife.... again, happy as a kid in a candy store....Wife, wife, look what a beautifull addition we now have....
Me and my wife.... running downstairs.... both of us highly excited....
Me, open the door with a hughe proud smile in my face, wife.....well.... ..... It was something between a heart attack, mental breakdown and moving out

Well, needless to say, if the female part of our household is angry, I better do everything possible to calm her down again...

That was the shortest stop of any collectable in my house...
Picked up in the morning... estand 12 hrs. later....

What would be a fair price for this banner?

Thanks in advance.... and remember.... better keep your wifes happy

        Alex,

I know what your mean While at my friend the E-Boat Commander's house, he was like a kid in a candy store when he presented me with his boats flag. I was positively beaming and the wife smiled politely. We went on with the rest of our visit, treked up to the local ruins and went out to dinner. Said our goodby's got into the car and as soon as we got out of site of the house, my wife told me that the flag would NOT be going up in the house! The imperial flag is ok, but nothing with a swastika! So I have it put away. Wouldn't dream of selling/trading it. Back to the naughty chair

Thank you, now I feel better.... I'm not the only person on the planet with clear rules (made up by the female counterpart) if it comes to swastica's bigger than a dollar bill.

Well, I should not complain too much.... I spend a looot of time in front of the computer searching for something WW2 related.... she does not complain about that.

Thanks again, you made my day

My pleasure, as flags have been my own nearly 40 year collecting passion.
Years ago I owned a 60 foot HJ banner, but sold it off to buy smaller soldier
trooped unit flags. Sadly I found out later that it was cut up to make lots of
smaller flags - back in the 1970's big flags were thought of as junk. These
days folks better appreciate big flags, especially unique examples like yours.
As for a "fair price" on your large HJ banner, IMO around $350 USD comes to
mind, but maybe more to the right collector. As for wives, I showed photos
of my flags to my wife on our first date, so she has never had an excuse since
day one for making up such anti-flag rules. Here it is "Die Fahne Hoch!"

              Hello Oldflagswanted,

              you hit the nail spot-on...
Thats what I did wrong 8 years ago when I met her the first time.
I'll prepare a photo album with all kinds of swastika filled items and show it (I wished I would never had such thoughts) to my maybe future wife....Ok, I did not write that please delete....

Again, I do not complain about her, also the "rules" are somewhat ok to me.... She keeps up with my "hobby" quite well, which is sometimes, even to me a big surprise.

Thanks for your estimate on the rough price range for the banner.

                Hello Oldflagswanted,

I just read your response again and stumbled over "60 foot banner" and "thought of as junk".

1: to what occasions was a 60 foot banner used? It sounds like a fully inflated festival ala Speer?

2: Do you know why these hughe banners weren't desirable items back then? Usually the value of a item is mostly driven by rarity... As far as I'm concerned, I've never seen a 60 foot HY banner at all, thats why I would suspect the value is very high?

"Die Fahne hoch" works in our household as well, as long as there are no signs of a swastika on it.

Btw. I'm German, that explains the random misspellings

                  USA-Alex:
Yes, my 60 footer was once from Speer's Nuremberg Stadium use.
Most often, at least back then, collectors wanted war room display
sizes - just about all you could do with really big flags was leave them
rolled. So these days it may sound odd, but display did trump rarity.

                        Hello EVR:
Heard this again in a recent phone call with Wolfe-Hardin Military
Antiques, further validating what I previous said that "collectors
want war room display sizes ...display trumps rarity." Have
often seen over my many years of doing shows, that big flags go
unsold, and then during packup, when table covers are no longer
needed, they sell for a fraction of what a small flag sold for earlier.
