A few might find this hard to believe, but here is the
"real" DE tassel identification secret. Something not
seen on the modern made reproduction tassels.

OFW, the photo you posted has always caused a discussion, what with the DE and flags shown. It was always assumed that these were police flags and DE for all the police. I have a copy of the book from which the photo was taken at pre-1933 NSDAP rally in Berlin. I always thought that the DE box was a special sign of some sort, as it seemed very large in relation to the DE finial. But it is important to understand that these policemen were Prussian and the flags and the DE were considered representative of the Polizei Fachschaft (professional cell/group) of the local NSDAP.

There was no national police in 1932, only independent state police forces, of which Prussia had the largest. At this time there was no police eagle with swastika. The official insignia of the Prussian police was the Prussian eagle on the six pointed star, seen in the four corners of the banner and on the NSDAP flags. These are not "police" flags, but rather flags of the local NSDAP police cell. The later box incorporated the new post 1936 police insignia as the police then was truly nationalized an as Hitler pointed out, united in spirit with the NSDAP.

                              JW:
Thanks for your interesting comments and police expertise.
I saw the Prussian eagle flag fragment, now in my collection,
available on the WAF e-Stand, offered by a member in Japan
of all places, Bill Unland. I initially saw it just after he bought
it & was walking by my Pamona Show tables 10 years ago. It
was of interest to me, as I like flag fragments, and in this odd
case I was aware of the Walker "F&BotTR" book photo that
showed such in early police parade use. So I was delighted
to get the chance to be able to buy this police star flag piece
after so many years gone by, thinking I had missed out on it
back when, never to see it again.

Regarding the POLIZEI box, IMO it is the same size as the
other DE standards, but the use of all capital letters makes
it look bigger than normal. And on the later M-1936 Police
eagle center emblem DE box, I think that Hitler's statement
about the police now being "united in spirt with the NSDAP",
bears out why the swastikas are included on their DE box.

Nurnberg, and Landshut. These four DE's had the more
expensive fully embroidered banners & screw in swastika
tops. Hitler didn't like their higher cost, so DE design was
changed both in 1925 and 1926 to lower the DE fab. cost.
