    13. Kompanie?

    Greetings all,

    Just picked up a Gewehr 1871/84 with the unit marking:

    35R. 13. 117.

    I was surprised, as I am used to German regiments of the Kaiserzeit period having only 12 companies in 3 battalions. I have also seen at least one bayonet marked to a "15. Kompanie." Under what circumstances would a German regiment have more than 12 companies?
