    Authenticity of a Mauser K98 Long Side Rail

    Hi there,
    I am looking at this Mauser K98 bcd 4 long side rail and I am wondering about its authenticity. What are the main things I should be looking for to verify the authenticity of this sniper rifle? I attached is a link with pictures in case that helps.

    You will need Dave or Steve to take a look at it. To me it looks strange. Very similar, but different numbers: rifle 8443x, bolt 8449x and mount 8449u. Does it have a checkered butt plate? What is serial number of the scope?
    I think base is new. It looks fresh, screws look fresh and there is no WaA proof.
    Scope mount may be good, but others opinions would help. To me numbers' font looks different that it should, but I may be wrong on that one.
    More pictures would help.

        Cossak is right !

        Barreled action look OK, correct BCD/CE "enlarged receiver"in good serial number , but very difficult without disassembled ... Bolt is correct BCD/CE but mismatch ...Factory error ???

        " Low security" is repro .

        Rifle LSR base is repro , screws are repro .

        Scope mount look ok but very difficult on this poor pictures ... The very very strange think is mount serial number ...

        Rifle serial number but in U letter block ???? U letter block is correct for this early machined mount ...

        Scope is not correct scope for this early mount ...

        No scope serial number ?

          I dont like the mounts at all, the machined ring mount repros are getting very good and this one looks too new and minty. If the mounts are bad then at best its a build or a restoration.

                        Jack, are you sure upon everything being legit? All original ones I've seen had lines cut at the locking lever only on top and bottom, yours has it all around the knob - a feature of copies.

                          I guess its a no go with this one. However, for my own future reference, what would be top money for a correct WW2 sniper, regardless of type? It doesn't necessarily have to be a long side rail. It could be any other type so long as it is for a completely original and known correct example of a WW2 sniper.

                              One additional thing: Jack, there is more wrong with your rifle. It has a milled front band and a Vz.24 (?) sling swivel. The handguard doesn't match colour of stock, which is heavily sanded. Have you checked the stock whether it matches the rifles action?
