Looking at buying one of these Lugers, help is appriciated

I am looking to buy my first Luger. A fellow member recommended the website these 2 Lugers are on. These 2 Lugers are in my range at $1400 and $1700. I am looking for a TR era Luger with military acceptance marks. He mentions that the $1700 gun has military acceptance marks and the $1400 Luger has eagle/655 proofs, is that the same thing a a military acceptance mark? Both Lugers match except for the mags. Here are the descriptions and links.

    1. $1400

9mm Luger; 85% blue, fair bore, good grips, 4'' barrel, Original blue finish with areas of some touch up. Original un-numbered checkered walnut grips. Matching except the magazine, a pinned aluminum bottom vartiation which is numbered 4177o/+. Eagle/655 proofs. Area of wear and spotting on the bottom of the front grip strap. Mechanically fine. C&R/FFL, s/n 96xxy, Catalog Number M-30

    2. $1695

9mm Luger; 60% blue, good bore, good grips, 4'' barrel, Original blue finish and matching number checkered walnut grips. All matching except the magazine, which is a proper variation 122 code e/37 proofed with pinned aluminum bottom numbered 6570f/+. Stamped on top of the toggle with the Mauser code byf and on top of the chamber with the date code 42. The left side frame is stamped P.08. The right side of the receiver is stamped with two eagle/135 proofs and a military acceptance mark. Other military acceptance marks appear on the right side of the barrel and left side of the breechbolt. A small eagle/135 proof is located over the left side of the barrel. We imported this Luger from Switzerland and our import mark appears on the back of the frame. The metal finish shows wear with thinning on the grip frame and barrel and some scattered light surface spotting. Mechanically fine. The bore has strong rifling, showing some corrosion throughout. C&R/FFL, s/n 45xxg, Catalog Number M-76

Simpson is always on the higher end with their prices, that being said I also know them to be a good place to do business with. You pay more perhaps but at the end of the day you also get peace of mind. Best of luck with your Luger journey.

The Eagle/135 or Eagle/655 is the Army acceptance mark. The Eagle/Swastika is the firing proof. Some copy writers like to call all the marks "proofs", but that is not the case.

It's hard to find a nice luger for under $2000 at Simpson's.
Gun #1. Cold blue touch up is a big turnoff to collectors.
Gun #2. In my opinion it is over priced for the condition. Import mark will be a negative.
Rock Island has a bunch of similar lugers in their upcoming February auction.
Gunbroker.com is a good option if you are patient.

I am one that has mentioned Simpson here and I do consider their site as a good reference . Prices on the upper end - Yes but they have a good supply of them and I use it as a barometer of sorts . They definitely know Lugers AND the market . Now buying there is up to you and I have bought, sold and traded quite a few Lugers with Bob , Brad and Dave . Yes there are other places to look and buy for sure . More important is the fact that some places are NOT HONEST and will sell you mis-represented crap and think nothing of it . What you did here - post possible purchase candidates for opinion is a good idea and as with any forum you need to sift through the responses . What you seek is very common and with a little patience you should be able to get at least a 90% finish matching example . Not a matching mag probably but late ones often have plastic bottom mags anyway . Patience is your friend on this . Pics are both byf 41's and the right one with black grips and mag came from Simpsons . It was advertised as 92% and it was advertised as having scattered small scratches but all original . And it is and I paid $2,000 for it . I personally like nicer ones but as you can see it is serial # 1234 and I like neat serial #'s so it is here to stay . Dave

If you are just going to have one, pick a good one. Not one with cold blue, or import marked. Don't buy it with the intention of reselling it, but keep it in the back of your mind how easy it would be to sell should you decide to sell it. A buyer will have the same concerns as you.

VERY GOOD ADVICE HERE !!!!!!!!!! I just looked through Simpsons list and IF I was looking for a late Nazi luger in the $2,000 range I would go after M-75 catalog number . Yes it is slightly above your target but they usually work with you a little on price . No I am not connected with them in any way other than being a customer . Plenty on other sites also . Again Johnny gave excellent advice above . Dave

                IMHO, the best advice!
I only own 8-9 lugers, all different types & was able to get terrific guns for a fair collector to collector value from collectors, either here on Estand or on 1 of the 2 quality Luger forums.
I always posted before buying & it saved me twice from making a mistake.

Good luck, they are sooo fun to shoot!
