the other mag is not numbered.

I have a nicer holster and extra mags... so... will sell the holster/mag

      Robert,

Don't do that. If the holster is dated 1944-45, as Leon said (and he knows a lot about P38s) then it is a rather desirable piece, because it is a hardshell variation. After 1944 most of the holsters were the softshell.

Besides that, I would keep the rig as it reached your hand.

      Douglas.

I agree completely. Unless the seller indicated that he added the subject holster at a later time, separating items that have been together since the war devalues the rig and destroys history.

              thanks guys for the comments..

I want the pistol.... but... don't want the holster/mag.

if the holster is late war... then it doesn't match the pistol anyway.

You don't know that. The mans early holster could have worn out or been damaged and he received a new replacement holster. Who knows if it came home that way or not ,,,,, id leave it as it is.

Exactly right! It would be absurd to believe that combat pistols always retained their original issue dated holster - in this case for three years. I never seperate original bring back rigs. How they come is how they stay and I see no benefit in altering the history of an item. But I guess there are two schools of thought. In the end the owner can do what he wants good or bad. Perhaps the best way to hedge the bet is to keep the old holster with the new holster.

Scott, your comment is correct! The owner can do as he sees fit. Unfortunately, the history aspects mean more to some than others...

My .02 - at such a very reasonable price, keep 'em together. If you or your kids sell it down the road, you'll get a much better price. These are investments, too !
