Most recent MP40 aquisition. Got this live registered MP40 at a police auction for a fraction of what is it worth. AYF 43, all matching numbers, mint bore, 90-95% original condition.

Very Nice catch! I wish we had the same rights concerning firearms over here.. Last year more than 40 live mp40s wen't in the old melting pot because the museum they belonged to didn't have room for them.. But thats another story! Glad to see This one ended up in a good home. Great find, John; very nice MP-40 you have there. Is this is a fully transferable C&R gun?

IMO it is VERY unusual to find a transferable MG at a police auction; after all, police auctions are usually of firearms that were taken from crimnals so any MG's that come into the hands of law enforcement are usually by means other than an approved NFA transfer.

While I have heard of widows donating/surrendering their deceased husbands' legally registered MG's to local PD's as a way to get rid of unwanted guns, in all such cases the guns were NOT lawfully transferred to the PD but were simply physically handed over to the cops (i.e. widow drives over to the police station and drops it off). In the absence of a BATFE approved transfer, the fully transferable status of the gun is forever destroyed by the unapproved physical transfer. While some PD's later Form 10 such abandoned/surrendered guns so that the PD may lawfully retain them, the ablity of private individuals to ever own the gun has been eliminated.

Do you have any idea how your MP-40 ended up in a PD's inventory?

wow thats is a very near mint condition!!!!!!! super ,and big bonus is its still can be shot! ,we have here in europe realy hard core law for mp/mg. i do know abaut few ...but never want to buy one as it can cost few years in jail

I don't have any idea how the PD got it but it was a fully registered C&R gun and transfered to me on my C&R license with no problems. I got it for 1/2 of what they usually go for. It is 100% matching even the bolt and recoil assembly. I was actually very lucky to get it as the high bidder backed out on the sale and the CIII dealer called me up and offered it to me at my last bid price and I took it. I wish I could find a couple of more like that.

Wow - John; that is quite a find you have and, especially considering that a SOT was involved, quite an accomplishment that the asking price did not get jacked up to full market. Good score!

This one ran me $7,500.00.
That is less than the price of your average tube gun. I saw a similar MP40 non-matching, with worse finish and bore sell for $12,500.00 two weeks ago. I feel very lucky. Just got to find me another pair of original pouches and 6 ayf 43 mags now.

In all the excitement of bidding I forgot to ask how they got it! They assured me as did the CIII that it was a C&R registered NFA weapon and that is how it transferred. Maybe they had seized it prior to the amnesty and registered it then. One of the mysteries of life. I may call the dealer and see if he knows. It just was not an issue for me at the time.

In the early 80s I remember an old woman turning in one of those .45ACP "Grease Guns" into the PD where I was working (Galveston Texas PD) and the BATFE (then just called ATF) papered it and our department was able to trade it for two AR-15s.
I suppose the laws have changed since then but this one may have been in their Property Room for the last 30 years.

As Denny said , most police departments just make one call & the paper work just shows up.
not actually the major deal that Every one claims.
all full autos can still get papers , IF you talk to the right people.
2 places in the U.S.A. still have amnesty program once a year.

Back to the actual topic.... John , very sweet mp 40 , excellent condition , ect. & can't beat the price !!

Try forum member 'rolv' for those mags, he has quite a few to sell.

nice one but price afraid me here in luxembourg /EUROPE you can find live ones for 1000 - 1500 euros registered . i think luxembourg is the heaven for collectors of full auto amateur .
