k98 maintenance

hey fellas!

just got a k98 russian capture from big 5 this past week!

before i go pick it up after the 10 day wait, i just wanted to prep myself and get a good cleaning kit.

the rifle is very dirty and a lot of muck can be seen down in the barrel! its probably been neglected for many years, so i was wondering what is the best way to tackle the problem. i know i can clean it with your conventional cleaning kit, but just wanted to know what you guys do for the initial cleaning process before you take it out to the shooting range.

also, what do other k98 owners use to preserve their gun?

From the breach.... 8mm brass brush to knock off the big chunks... jag with patch, repeat...

really awful bores I even use an electrolysis affair

If the bore is very corroded, do yourself a favor and buy a stainless steel bore brush.

dissassembly is what I would do first, and I would pick up a bore snake makes life alot easier.

The Boresnake works OK for cleaning a smooth shiney barrel, but sound like the rifle has a rough bore, and the Boresnake just wasn't designed and isn't agressive enough for removing crud from a rusted bore. Nothing takes the place of a single piece rod and bore brushes for removing corrosion. You can make 20 passes coming and going with the rod and brush while you are trying to get the Boresnake pulled through, turned around, and fished back through the barrel.
