Looks like a very nice example indeed! The only difference between the M1 and the M1A1 is the M1A1 does away with a seperate firing pin and instead the firing pin is fixed to the bolt.

Your gun has a:
M1 receiver
M1 magazine catch
M1A1 or late M1 rear sight
M1A1 rocker and safety levers
M1A1 bolt
correct stamping for a Savage M1 or M1A1
The rear sight with the protected ears started around 137,000 and the change from M1 to M1A1 at Savage was around 260,000 so you have a transition M1 with some M1A1 parts. If this gun was in the states I would think the ATF would call it a M1 because that is what the receiver says. A good book on Thompson's is American Thunder II which will give you a lot more info then I can type with one finger. The main difference between a M1 and a M1A1 is the bolt but there some other minor differences . Parts are interchangeable between the two.

Thanks for that wealth of information Bruce, and I will definately look for American Thunder II. That is what I enjoy in collecting firearms. First research on a firearm I set my eyes on, once I decide, it's off to the gunshop to choose the one and rush off to the police station to sort the papers out. First thing when I take it home is taking it apart, see all the parts how they are made and how they work ( clean and lubricate in the process). Then reasearch further with more in depth good reference books and look for any accessories that go with it.
Only problem is that I do not have a strong room to keep and display them safely, so for now I keep in safes, but space runs out fast and at the moment I need another safe, but these safes are not a popular piece of furniture to my wife and adding another will not be a popular decision
