M1 Garand question

    M1 Garand question

    Hello folks I really want a M1 Garand, recently it seems prices on thee things have gone wayyyyy up.

    I have a choice between a Winchester garand in good condition, mixed parts , reciever dated to early 1944, it has a new krieger criterion barrell but it has not been headspaced. metal is in decent shape wood is too not sure about stock markings.

    or an HRA garand in great condition it looks almost new, metal is dark black and wood looks great, mixed parts as well. not sure about stock marks or date. both are priced in the 850-950 range.

    Thoughts on which one would be better for shooting and collecting? I love that the winchester receiver is WWII but the finish is worn and im unsure of the new barrel. The HRA finish is great but im unsure of date and would prefer WWII.

    Hi I too have some of the same questions about the Garands. I had a chance last year to buy an early 1954 HRA with all parts matching and had to give a good price ($1400) for it but was not disappointed because of the condition which is pretty much 99%. Just lately was able to buy an HRA from 1956 with the barrel and receiver in the dark black but appears unfired but is a mix-master of some parts. SA bolt, IHC trigger group, RIA stock, HRA op rod, etc. Was pretty much disappointed but found out this was pretty much the case in the late production HRA's. Was also told that only 300,000 HRA's were produced and therefore have created a small collector following for them. I'm sure the real Garand gurus can add some much needed provinence to what both of us would like to know Really don't think we can go wrong owning one of them. Tomt

      the collector value of the Winchester is shot due to the fact it's not original and what is even more puzzeling is why the barrel wan't finshed off after installation those criterion ( kriger commercial division) barrels are short chambered which i finish of all the time at work after i install a new barrel on any m1 Garand receiver. who ever installed it never finished the process or didn't have the proper tools to do so. a short chamber reamer some lard an old drill chuck and old cleaning rod and the bolt to be used in the rifle and your good to go.

          Maybe around $400 for the winny since it is in unusable condition.

          The HRA would be a better choice. But since you are in the USA why not get one through the CMP? $495 for a really nice M1 Garand. Guaranteed in fine working order and you can usually choose your manufacturer, you cannot beat it.

          I picked up a rack grade HRA dated 1955 and almost all matching except the barrel and the windage knob.

            How long did you have to wait? Also it says on the CMP you have to have membership in CMP affiliated organization and be in a marksmanship or other firearms related activity. Im at college in the middle of nowhere at the moment so I would have to do some searching, closest place on the CMP list is over 4 hours away.

                Thanks a ton SMG!, I can mail the form in and they send the info directly to the CMP. Now I just have to figure out the marksmanship or other firearms related activity.

                  I actually went to the south store and picked my M1 from the rack. I am lucky though and only have to show my military ID to qualify for purchases.

                  To purchase you must do what they require for qualification then send in that information to the CMP when you are ready to purchase. Or bring it with you to either of the two stores (recommended)

                  Also I want to correct what I said earlier all was matching on my HRA except the bolt and windage knob. The barrel is matching.
