    98k out of the woodwork!

    Hi Guys,
Here is my latest find. A 98 k DOT 1944 all matching. Stock and handguard are also marked DOT as well as H for Heer and acceptance eagle. These particular made 98's are actually quite common, but the condition of this one is very nice. The bore looks unfired, and the firing pin hole on the bolt face has (NO) primer ring!
The former owner supposedly used this rifle to hunt deer for many years. Jeff A

                Jeff,
Thats a nice rifle... while you might feel its a comman example the truth is that nice rifles like this are starting to get tough to find.
                Great find!

                  Robert,
You are very right! I think they are getting harder to find because you and Matt have bought them all up! LOL Jeff A

                    Jeff,
There once was a time when you could buy Krag rifles for almost nothing, go to a show these days and you will be lucky to find one that has not been messed with... and they don't go cheap.

You bet, I buy every 98k that I find that is 100% straight.... look what happened to G/K43's.

Even if you pay top dollar time will take you out of it, when its all over not only will you have been able to enjoy them all of your life... you will be able to sell them so your kids can waste the money

Real dark blueing, nice I like it..

So I know, are the tooling marks around the bolt/reciever where it is maker marked and dated, because of the year of manufacture or something done with this maker for that year?

                        Perry,
I think it was just not important to finish weapons that well by this period of the war. You see sloppiness in appearances in a lot of weapons by this time!

                          Jeff,

Great find Jeff! I like it a lot!

What do mean Robert and I buy up all the K98s! You got more than I do!
I just sold 3 k98s last month, so my supply is really low now.

                          Perry,
I've own several "dot" made K98s, and I have found that almost all of them have rough machine marks around the reciever ring like this one. I feel it is a characteristic of this maker. However, I have also seen markings like this on recievers from other makers as well, but they usually aren't as pronounced as "dot" one are.
I've posted a pic below of another "dot" reciever. Notice the machine markings as well.

                            Perry,

Here is a "dou" marked K98. Notice the machine markings on this reciever. Now compare this one with the "dot" one shown above.

Interesting, I knew as the war progressed corners were cut, etc,. But was wondering if certain makers could maybe have the same traits as far as corners cut like the dot44 example. So the far majority of dot 44's will have this characteristic found on the reciever? Is there any one maker that kept better quality control above all others throughout the war? Meaning would like a Steyr late war be better than a Mauser late war more than likely or visa versa?
