    1917 dated Artillary Lugar

I was hoping that someone on the forum could help me with this 1917 dated DWM artillary lugar and holster. I've been offered this gun on a trade for some helmets, and I have to admit I know little about these guns. Overall the condition looks very nice, it appears to be the original finish. All numbers are matching except the clip that has no numbers at all. I have no idea how to value this firearm, and haven't had much luck looking on the web. Thanks for any help you could give me. Jon

It will be difficult to tell much about the gun with few pictures. You will need to take the gun apart to check the numbers on the inside as well as the outside.Have the owner do it if you do not know how.Any part that does not match is the kiss of death to a Luger,Firing pin, grips, trigger, ect. The plate that is above the trigger on the outside should show some finishing lines.Make sure the letters and numbers are not painted .Does the back of the pistols grip show wear. The gun should show wear where it was held and handled.Lugers are a mine field, but so are helmets

This IMO is somewhat severe. I wouldn't want a collectible Luger with a major mismatched part. However I wouldn't turn down an othrewise nice example due to the fact that it had a minor internal replaced part. I think we sometimes forget that many of these are pushing the century mark and were made to be used not please some present day collector.

I appreciate all the information that your providing in this matter. The gun was taken apart and the internal parts were all matching, the only part that did not have a matching number was the clip, which had no number at all. There was some miner wear in the areas that you mentioned, but overall the finish looked great. I know its hard to really tell much from the photos that I provided, but could you tell me an approximate range on value. Thanks again, Jon

At first glance the side plate looks to have been refinished but looking at the forward toggle I see a definite halo around the two digit serial number. That same halo effect should also be apparent on the serial number on the extractor and the barrel. The barrel guage measurement on the barrel should also show a halo. If these three locations show the halos you can be damn near certain it has not been reblued.

You say all the parts match except the magazine, the magazine doesn't matter, in fact most matched magazines I see are bogus. Depending on the condition and originality of the holster the outfit ought to bring $2500 to $3000 depending on how long you want to shop it around.

A all matching artillery Luger with a mismatched magazine and 94% original finish. Is worth at least $2500 to $3000. A maker marked and dated artillery holster with no major problems is worth around $600 and up. I have seen double date Lugers that saw service through all three periods. With a array of mismatched parts everything from a swapped out barrel, frame ect. That were still legit.
