I am interested in buying an MG-34 or 42,but I have some questions. Could someone please outline the steps that would be needed for me to acquire a fully auto machine gun please? I do not have an FFL,and honestly,I don't know much about weapons in general, but I do know that I want a full auto MG. Also,it will be firing blank, inert ammunition ONLY!!!! If anyone could throw in the approximate cost of things also, such as any BATF fees or yearly fees ,etc.. I am fairly new to this,so any help will be greatly appreciated. Danke,Andreas.

Class
There is a one time fee of 200$ per Class three weapon... There are forms which are fill out in duplicate, you are finger printed and the back of each form is signed by your CLEO (Chief Law Enforcement Officer) in NC it is the Sheriff of the county in which you live.. Cost of the weapon 20 to 30 Thousand dollars... Look up Kent Lamont or Bob Landies web site to see if they have any in stock, for invidual transfer... BILL

machine gun ownership
You can buy machine guns that fire only blanks or propane for a fraction of the price if its reenacting. Do not forget that the BATF is an extremely corrupt organization originally having 9000 field agents, almost being disbanded and now down to 2000 agents. Anyways aside from that history, in addittion to the steps above it will take 6 months literally every time you wish to purchase a new machine gun.

If they only fire blanks(only one is approved so far) or propane they are not classified as firearms at all and so there is no regulation. Just make sure that it is an approved item first; it will save you a lot of money in the long run.

The amnesty lasted for one month way back in 1968. 1986 is the year they outlawed the further manufacture of machine guns for the general public. You could buy what was allready out there but there were no more to be added to the population. Prices didn't skyrocket till about 10 years ago however.

Gary is correct, the amnesty act was in 1968. 1986 was when they stopped producing any further class 3 weapons for public sales.
Bill, I believe the fee for a class 3 transfer is up to $600 now. I may be wrong though?
I know Bill Landie has a few MG34s for sale right now. Price will be 25K-30K. Charlie Justmann has an M3, M1917, and STg44, but no MG34/42s. Prices are 15K-21K.
Class 3 weapons have literally skyrocketed in the past 5 or 6 years! and continue to climb each year.

MG Prices
Hello Guys,
Thanks for clearing that up. I never realised that prices for MG's were so expensive down south. Up here in Canada the prices for Full Auto stuff is realitively cheap (2-3K) because they have been Prohibited and very few people have a license to own them. No Demand, no High Prices.
Thanks,
Cam

Canada Laws
Hello,
Sorry Matt, but it is not a nice as it sounds.
When they brought the Auto Laws in back about Twenty years ago, they set it up so no one else can get the license for Full Auto. Last year they brought in an Admendment to the law which now states that the few people with them can no longer take them to the range. So no one can legally shoot them and no one new can buy them. They are really crappy laws.

Matt ; The only amnesty for automatic weapons was in 1968 as you note , and yes further manufacture and importation for non law enforcement or non military purposes was outlawed in may 1986 by the Dole Amendment. But up until may 1986 you could apply for and receive permit(s) to manufacture an automatic wepaon. This little loophole allowed many previously illgeal wepaons to become legal. The recivers had to be cut in two - then with the paperwork supplied to the proper machinist whom then rewelded and made the weapon functional. I had a handfull of rather illegal MG's I had to sell off in 1986 .I had police friends whom warned me that it would be a good idea to get rid of them due to that then pending dole amendment. I did. I sold them to RECON ORDNANCE in fon du loc wisconsin and they were going to 'manufacture' them as I described before the dole amendment took effect and canceled out that loophole.
I would love to know the details on the amount of field agents the ATF goons have - does not seem plausible such a government agency would simply have 7,000 agents disappear.

Just a word of advice as this is a public forum...cut out the ATF are goons nonsence as it is not true. Most agents are decent folks. There are a very few bad eggs who give everyone else a bad name, but they exist in all walks of life and professions now don't they? As for your "loophole" you are so fond of, that was still against the law as you have described it. Fortunately for you the statute of limitations has run out on that little episode in your life. The 1986 ammendment forbade the further manufacture of machine guns, prior to that there was no "permit" to manufacture them. I as a Title II manufacturer would build it and then send the paper work to the ATF to place it on the NFA registry. What the ammendment did do was allow you to register a sear as a MG and have that added to the registry so that later on down the road you could then incorporate that into a semi as a MG conversion. Fleming registered something like 20,000 HK sears in that manner. Drop in Auto Sears for the Ar-15 conversions were like wise papered in large numbers.
