These are the sweetest little rifles ever made!! Not trying to steal your thread, just to show I've got a little "crass" too!

P.S. I've always wondered why the suffix "B" on my rifle. Could it be an eight, like yours??

The B was added as a suffix when a Model 1922 M1 was upgraded by replacement of the bolt with the later type M2 bolt. An additional "I" was added after the model number making it read 1922 MII. These bolt replacements were made starting in about 1937. The bolt also required the replacing the magazine with the M2 magazine to function properly. Most of the 1922 M1 issue type stocks were replaced with the M2 stock when the conversion occurred.

I should add.... the M2 bolt was/is a head space adjustable bolt meant to be utilized by the armory when building rifles or swapping barrels. It was not meant to be a user adjustable bolt. It did make re-barreling and manufacturing a faster process.

So you can see the difference in the two Mark two's posted. Gary's is an original 1937 M2 and Ron's is an altered MI to MII in 1937 and the barrel changed with the addition of the M2 bolt. That's all signified by the B suffix and barrel date of 1937 on a serial number that preceedes that date.

I just spotted this thread sprung back to life and JDB is correct on all counts. As far as why the Army would use a .22LR...it's actually quite simple. At that time the Army was extremely strapped for cash and as we all know .22 is cheap! They did also of course use them for competition as well.
