ALL ORIGINAL? LIKE SCABB. FITTING AND GUARDS - FORMER PLATED, LATTER SOLID NICKEL? GROUP MARK LOOKS LIKE '…Nrh' WITH OTHER LETTER A LIGHT STRIKE SO, 'NIEDERRHEIN' WHICH IS GOOD FOR THIS PIECE. ALSO, TO ME THE GRIP-SCABBARD-GUARD FIT SEEM FINE. BTW, NO HANGER MARKS AND BLADE IS PLATED. THANKS, ALL.

Based on the photos I would say the dagger is original.
However, I'm not sure if the scabbard belongs to the dagger, since the metal scabbard parts have a yellowish patina, but the metal dagger parts not. Or they have been cleaned?
Anyhow, the 3 piece hanger is a nice add-on.
All in all, a solid dagger

A rare and beautiful piece, David, rated #9 on McSARR! I agree that the lightly-stamped SA Group mark is "Niederrhein." Ingo does make a point, though: it does look like the grip hardware has been washed while the scabbard shows nicotine and/or verdigris.
Unlike some of our colleagues here, I see no problem in gently washing a piece with soap and water; after all, the only thing that will wash off is what wasn't originally there during the period anyway!

interesting - thanks loads for the inputs! I've examined the blade closely and see no signs whatever that is was grained. what's more, a polish heavy enuf to eliminate the cross-graining would I think have turned the motto very shallow - and in the process probably reduced or removed the darkening in the etch.
I dont have my sa book, and granted diff. makers used darker or fainter mottos but this etch seems quite normal. maybe of owners can check theirs and chime in with a foto or 2.
also, I note the blade of an m33 ss I had was in quite bright nickel that matched the fittings. I was dubious, but TW was convinced it was fine and despite 'nays' from a fair number of folk liked it enuf to put it in his book. not that his is the last word, nor is sa vs. ss exactly comparing apples to apples. yet, a 'could-be' in the Never Say Never realm? thanks again. love to hear more.

further thoughts -
--maybe a former owner got to work on the guards long ago then thought better of it and stopped - leaving the guards now time-dulled and the scabb fittings still mostly nico'd.
--as to blade and dagger being put-together, all the parts fit together nicely suggesting a permanent mating; anyone disagree?
--getting more curious, I made pix of the top scabbard plate to see the nickel's appearance protected from smoke, haze and other 'environmentals' that would tone the other bits. as you see, it's pretty well blinding. I didnt touch this part and very much doubt anyone has besides the krebs polisher. after all, who sees it?
--I'm guessing, anyhow, that bringing all the externals up to the same polish level then saying, 'see!'
mightn't be the best plan -- tho it could sort some things out. what do you say? thanks again guys.
I'd planned to photograph the scabbard fitting's insides, but barring your advice, will not.Attached Files
