I personally dont like units upper as Regiment, the division as unit is always problematic, i would compare the proof on backside of frog with real one.b.r.Andy
PS 2FJDiv builded in 1943, in that time made a etch on KS98 i would means its too late.

I see a lot of problems here. The frog condition is much too nice for the condition of the scabbard, A Klaas type etch and hilt on the bayonet, although they MIGHT have produced it for Herder (?). Condition of bayonet doesn't match scabbard either???

Valid points about the wear on the scabbard & frog but we always have to be aware that they could have been swapped out at some point.

I think the money in a piece like this is the etch & whether it's period. I've seen similar type etches but never seen one to a Fallschirmjäger unit. Assuming Klaas subcontracted etches for Herder, the etch itself looks period to me.

Herder is a known purchaser of Klaas type etches (as well as Holler types), so that Klaas type pattern on a Herder marked blade is not an issue to me at all.

Would your opinion change at all if I told you that I bought this etch from Wayne?

Point noted, and if it was just for the 2nd Regiment by that name it might have not been called into question. But the blade clearly says “Division” which was not in existence as such until February of 1943 being formed in western France. Elements of which being sent to Italy for operations there, the Division was sent to Russia later in the year. FP

Strange bakelite grips rivets for Herder Solingen dress bayonet.

PS: As for the frog - prior to 1942 the Luftwaffe had stopped marking the legitimate frogs made for it, and we see limited numbers of the last dated Luftwaffe frogs made in black conforming to the Wehrmacht practice. FP

Curious - a more thorough look at the unit history provided some interesting background information on the unit's formation in 1943 and non-blade related period artifacts that were associated with it, being one of other similar creations in that time frame. 1943 itself also when series new manufacture for the civilian market was officially prohibited - although the facts of the matter are that it was probably early in 1942 judging from the fact that there are no 1943 dated RZM blades, and manufacturing standards from Solingen for the Wehrmacht went rapidly downhill. Like Johnz states Herder purchased Klass Etches for their Dress Bayonets according to Wayne's book.Rivets look right,Etch is clear and well executed..nothing stands out as a 'Red Flag' imo.

A very rare Etch indeed possibly a special custom order?
