SS Officer swords grip wire

I believe the argument over the so call “SS Officer Candidate” sword has been settled. They are swords for those SS Officer who did not receive the SS Honor sword with runes button. My question now is why some of these swords have grip wire and some don’t? Did have to do with rank?

Here are three without grip wire. From left to right...Dachau, Herm Rath with SS runes on blade and a unmarked one.

Both sides of these degens without grip wire are the same. Because there is no wire twist to hide they don’t need the back strap.
