    98K ?? Identifcation

I believe this is a 98K but I am not sure what the portepee is for. Is it supposed to be like this or is it put together?

    Thanks for any assistance.

The bayonet is not serial numbered or military accepted, so I would assume it's commercial.....Bodes

The bayonet has wrong mounted grips, probably screws were added after dissasembling wrong side, the piece is not proofed WaA but police proofed of period post 1939, the frog is late war Wehrmacht piece 1943/44, Knot probably for Sch.police of period prior 1940. b.r.Andy

As Andy stated a German Police bayonet with a Wehrmacht frog.

............... But not the Military Police (as it’s currently used at least in the U.S.) but IMO more like a militarized Police in organization and equipment. With the early style TR era German Police markings originally carried over from the Prussian Police (the expert on these is forum member JoeW who besides being a major contributor to TW’s book, has written/contributed a lot to various pistol collectors books/publications concerning the German Police.) That said, the spine markings here are related to those similarly marked pistols made for the Police under their own contracts. The Police using both those Police marked pistols made to Wehrmacht acceptance specifications, and those made to their own unique specifications that was not acceptable to the Wehrmacht. Most likely intended for Police motorized formations who were organized and equipped as for soldiers. Having in addition to pistols, submachine guns and rifles roughly comparable to their numbers - which ranged from platoon size units up to reinforced companies in various locations throughout the Reich. Thanks to all for the information!

As primarily a medal/insignia collector I would have never thought there was that much info on a bayonet!
