Hi John,
I am no expert, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt! Just examining the lower fitting with the ball. If I compare it to the photos in Thomas M. Johnson's book German Daggers of WW2 (volume 2) your scabbard fitting looks very different. The cut-out goes all the way to the upper lip in the originals. The cut-out in your scabbard leaves a lip below the edge. Besides the design itself does not look as cleanly done as the many originals originals in the book. That leads me to believe the scabbard is NOT an original....
Kind regards,

Hi John,
I must agree with the Herr Doktor! In looking at the blade's reverse, one quickly sees that the font used for the inscription is not produced in Fraktur shrift, the German Gothic version of Blackletter script, but it is in the English Gothic version of Blackletter. For a quick reference, Google "Fraktur" and you'll find a guide to the German script version which would have been used for this inscription.
The difference between Fraktur and English Gothic fonts is clearly seen in the capital letters of the inscription...the most telling being the "S" in "Sept."
Hope this is helpful to you,
Br. James
