Someone called me today and said they had a WWII German dagger. It turned out to be a Coppel police dagger. The same three-digit number was on the guard and the sheath, but above it on the sheath was the word SOLINGEN and it had several X's over it, clearly showing that someone wanted to cross out the word.
Was that done during its service life, and, if so, for what reason? The tip of the blade had some tarnish on each side and the stitches on the sheath had come apart along much the seam, so between those and the X'ed out wriiting I didn't offer them a lot, and they turned me down (although they had no counter offer and really seemed more like they wanted a free appraisal then to sell it).
Thanks.
