It looks like the scabbard and crossguard have been repainted and the crossguard held in place by a pin through the ricasso. I'd wait for an example without issues.

The scabbard doesn´t belong to the knife !
It´s a scabbard of a private purchased WWI knife and it is overpainted.

The rivet throught the blade holds the crossguard and this is original, not a Bubba-work !

You can find such pattern knifes with the WKC-mark, also, without.

The author Eugen von Halasz describes this particular pattern knife in his book "Deutsche Kampfmesser" as a 2nd WW item !

It´s possible, that WKC blades were reissued with this knife in WWII actually.

I do have some WWI trench knives, made by WKC, showing this "Bowie-style" blade, but none of them were equipped with this kind of hilt with wooden grip plates !

You can find this hilt also at other German WWII fighting knives.

BTW, the crossguard and the tang were blackened at this particular fighting knife.

IMO a legit German fighting knife of WWII !

@Kurzer: If I were in your spot I´d buy this knife !

If the knife is from WWII and the knot and scabbard are from WWI, the scabbard and crossguard appear repainted, and the scabbard is missing it's cross strap, I'd wait and put my money toward an example without issues. This knife has been messed with and put together IMO. If you wanted just the knife as a WWII example and don't mind the repaint, go for it.

Yes, the "set" is put together, but, IMO, the knife itself ist quite OK !

Hi Reibert,

The crossguard is very rough, it looks like it has corrosion that was painted over just like the scabbard. The color doesn't look right either, and it shows no wear. I think the paint on the blade in the last picture is the sure giveaway

I think the OP was asking if it was a good WWI example, which it isn't. The knot and knife by themselves could be collectible. I wouldn't want the scabbard.
