Craigs list SA and Dress dagger pickup

Hi all I am not a dagger guy but I feel I did okay on the SA. It is a Ludwig Groten dagger and looks like it has never been apart. I did some looky see about SAs before I bit but would love to know how I did.

and more. I have tried to get educted a bit and from what my little bit of gleaning has found is that this is an early dagger with nickle fittings. The scabbard may be a replacement as I am not sure if this would be considered anodized.

now for the bayonet. I took a chance as he wanted to sell them both together. not sure if there ever was a teno dress bayo with this emblem on the handle. there is no makers mark on the blad and no scabbard.

Nobody will be able to give an opinion on how you 'did' without a purchase price.

Well I was mainly worried about "if I bought original pieces" I took a chance as it is out of my collecting area. The price was good enough for me to step out of my comfort zone with out too much worry.

I have to agree with Wags, if we don't know what you paid then there's no way to know if you got a good deal or just retail.

The SA looks fine so far as originality. I'd have serious reservations about the bayonet with a likely postwar added grip emblem. I'm not saying they never existed in the NS zeit but the number of tarted up pieces today outnumbers the originals 10 to 1 IMHO.

How is the emblem affixed to the grip? If it looks in any way glued in place or is fixed super tight then I'd submit that it would likely fall into the "embellished" group.

Ok, I paid $325 for both. I mainly wanted the SA but had to buy both. I am not selling the SA as I have wanted one for a good while so I am really wanting the knowlegdable folks here opinions. Such as condition, rarity or not of maker, correct scabbard, etc. It does not show in the photos but there is still about 50% of the "cross graining" left on the blade (kudos to lakesidetrader's link) There are a good bit of runner marks, it was in the scabbard backwards. I do not see any marks on the pommel nut to indicate it has been taken apart.

As for the bayo, the emblem is fairly tight and under a loop I can see no glue. The wear on the emblem is consistent with the bayonet and it also conforms to the shape of the grip.

Sorry about being reticent about giving purchase price earlier.

                  Thanks for the help,

                  Mike

Groten is about as rare as you can get. Nice pick up even with the non-matching scabbard. It's not necessarily a terrible detail, sometimes they come straight from the vet just like that. Who knows what route this item took through history?

As for the bayonet, they're not my area of collecting. However something about that emblem just doesn't seem right.

Thanks for the comment! So am I right in thinking the scabbard is for a RZM or transitional model dagger? I had the same feeling as well about the teno emblem but had too take it as well.

Great buy at $325 for both, yes the scabbard is a later RZM type with plated fittings but as RevYJ says it could have been brought home from Germany by the Vet this way, a great deal you got there imo

                            Mike,

If the bayonet emblem is fixed tight then I'd be skeptical of it's originality. It can still be trade bait for something else or keep it for the wall display. That said & keeping in mind the probable mismatch between dagger & scabbard, I'd still take a deal like this all day long. Well done.

I think you did fine! Good looking grip on your SA,can we see close up pic of maker mark? Keep your eye's peeled on ebay, anodized scabbards come up on there from time to time...Kevin.
