WELL ,IAM VERY HAPPY AS THE BLADE HAD SOME DIRT AND SCRATCHES OR LIGHT SHARPINING BUT IT CLEANED UP VERY VERY NICE!!! THATS THE ONLY THING I WILL CLEAN A LITTLE..THE BEST THING IS THE LIGHT WEAR ON THE SCABBARD PLUS THE 8 ON THE TOP OF SCABBARD AND AN 8 UNDER THE CROSS GAURD AND ITS A DIIFERNT MAKER THEN MY OTHER AND BIGER IN SIZE NOT OVERLY BIG AS THE OTHER IS JUST SUPER SMALL IN SIZE...THANKS FOR LOOKING

thanks robert and kevin,the scabbard is so neat as you can see/tell right were it was rubing againest his leg..and it did not hurt the leather as it just took off the color..wich is even nicer...well iam making up for that big fake hit i took....nice to here from you and take care guys! my new freind lisa i got this sword from if everyone could have here husband in prayer as his is going over to fight for our country...thanks guys!

can anyone tell abought the blade?i came out so good!! it looked as maybe someone did something to scratch the blade up a little but iam telling you its so nice and she even gave it to me cheaper as she said the blade was sratched...lucky the guy never sent the money out for my luft sword hanger as its going right on this one...its solid nickle and all the hanger ,so thats great all my girl freinds think iam crazy but i told her you can meet a nice guy collecting..she said yeah some nazi nut...oh well,her lose ...thanks guys!!

I've always been happy with the Horster produced fliegerschwerts. Overall, Horster did a very decent job manufacturing these pieces.

With respect to the blade, it's somewhat difficult to say a whole lot since the photos don't clearly illustrate the entire piece from tip to tang. However, from what I can see, it looks fine. It has the Horster MM where I would expect to see it, as well as the govt. wafmt. marking also where I would expect to see it. It does appear there are some blade scratches- nothing that significant however from what I can see. Sharpening- it's tough to say without better images.

Typically, these blades tollerate a pollishing quite well. Even with some of the mildly abrassive cleansers. That said, we don't want to get carried away and pollish them up every 6 months. The nickel is resiliant, though not bullet proof.

The "gold" you are seeing in the pommel is actually the brass "sun disc" core insert, also in the center of the quillion/crossguard. More often than not, we see these earlier nickel-silver examples showing wear which exposes the brass base. I think you've made the right decision leaving the fittings "as is". I don't see any signs of imminent death that necessitate invasive measures to preserve the piece. That said, the blade could probably use a good application of museum grade wax once you've finished with it.

The number "8" on the underside of the quillion and the matching "8" on the scabbard throat is likely nothing more than a property control number for inventory purposes. It's difficult to say what the saber was used for. It could have been a piece used for visiting officers during Class A events when that officer didn't bring his piece along. It could have been a piece that was issued to an NCO so he would not have had to purchase a piece, reflected by his monthly income- considering it was less than a commissioned officers would be. There are a plethora of potential reasons the piece was govt. owned and marked with a control number.

The Moroccan blue leather shows age and wear. Just be careful with handling the scabbard and the grip and you should be fine. Do not apply preservative waxes to the leather as it needs to breath. Avoid sunlight, and try to keep the piece in a stable environment and it should be ok.

Your fliegerschwert shows her age and is not in mint condition. However, for less than $500, you did quite well and that would be very difficult to beat.

thanks so much tom,as its leather scabbard is one in better then normal condition and its so neat if you came and seen it in person you will see the wear to it in the two spots as you can imagine it swinging back and forth two these two spots..and if wanted could put what ever it is shoe polish would color these spots and you could realy never tell its that miner.i love that part abought this sword the most as lisa is going to get me more info on this as her grandfather was in ww2 and took this out of germany so i was going to get his name rank and were he was over there at.basicaly what you see by the maker is all up and down the blade .like you said ,i took a little chrome polish and it came out very well.i have a nickle silver hanger for it as i picked that up months ago..i dont think it will hert adding it do you?ok,thank you for telling me abought it as thats so sweet of you as that does help!! when is there a show comming up?i would love for you to see this inperson as its like night and day as my picture takeing stinks!! i just love the used things as to the ones that were on a shelf..thats a better way of saying it,,.as of cores i like things to be perfect/mint ,but it has to be used or owened by someone for me!!thanks again as your always very helpful and kind. pammy

iam trying to get the blade but i cant get the hole thing as it just does not show anything.. so thats brass ?never new that the .
