    My first blade

I could have counted the seconds after hearing the landing gear retract as we were taking off, before Skipper said, "We will find you and Greg nice daggers in Louisville. Have no doubt about that!" Larry smiled in complete agreement.

I asked many questions and Larry and Skip gave the answers. My thoughts were confirmed. The dagger world of collecting is a breed all it's own. I also knew the edged weapons could get expensive. I have seen swords and blades priced up to 6 figures . . . as we were flying to the SOS, I was a little apprehensive, but very hopeful.

Back at the hotel, the evil bartender Greenwade cracked open a bottle of Austrian Rum, called Strohs. Skipper cut right to the chase. "What exactly are you looking for, Gary?" I answered that I like the stag grip RAD heuers. "Why those?" was the next question fired at me. "Well, I just think they look cool as hell. No other reason. They just caught my eye."

Skip and Larry looked at each other and laughed. They began to have a conversation about me, in front of me, as if I were'nt in the room.
    "Yeah, he's doomed."
    "No doubt about it."
"Once you want a dagger there is no turning back."
"You're right, he won't be happy until he has it."
"Wait till he holds one for the first time."
"There goes the ranch, the mortgage, the good credit rating."
"We'd better fix him another Stohs,"

That's how the first evening went. I knew I was getting into something, and Skip and Larry knew it too.

Thursday morning, during dealer set up, I followed Skipper and Larry all over the SOS. I was introduced to so many people. They seemed to know everyone.

After an hour or so, Skip says to me. "Follow me. An old friend of mine from Minnesota sets up every year and he is always sold out before the show even opens."

Later I learned this guy always does this. He gets a table but doesn't like to sit behind it. He sells all his goods quickly and then he walks around meeting old friends he has known for years.

As we approached his table, Johnson and Whittman were walking away with their arms full of edged weapons. Skipper says to me, "Sh*t! We may be too late!" As Skipper and the man from Minnesota shook hands, I noticed a few daggers left, but the dealer was talking to another guy about them. The next thing I know, Skipper, asks about the RADs and the other fellow left. (Thank God) The dealer pulls one from underneath the table and there she was . . . .a beautiful, dark silver patina, stag handled RAD heuer. Skipper explained the dagger was for me and it would be my first. The old gent seemed pleased that Skipper had come to him for such a purchase. Skipper asked the old guy, "Why didn't Whittman or Johnson grab this baby?" The old guy replied, "They did'nt ask for one of these."

"Since this is for you, Skip, I can go $500." I was amazed because I was prepared to pay $900 to $1000 for one this nice! Every table that had one of these had them marked in that price range. I kept quiet and watched the deal go down. Skipper reminded the guy it was for me and my first dagger. The old man watched me examine the beautifully made RAD. Then he said, "Ah hell, I'll let it go for $400 to you." On the spot I pulled out my wallet and handed the gentleman four crisp $100 bills. We shook hands as I thanked him for the great deal. He then throws in a padded zippered cloth case to hold my new item. It was one of the sweetist deals of the show for me, next to Greg's chained SS, and a deal I'll never forget.

That's how I got my first dagger. Here she is! Thanks again, Skipper and Larry. I will never forget that day.

You spend the other guy's money and he thanks you for it...to quote Gailen David, "God, I love this hobby!"

Can't wait 'til the MAX SHow to do it again,

          Skip

PS - Don't forget about the Army dagger!

I'm thinking that will be the one I search for next......but, then again the luftwaffe daggers are really cool. . . . and the dress bayonets. . . . .like on the cover of the SOS brochure. . . . .oh, what about those navy daggers . . .

Nice find Gary, that is a great price too. How come you were not wearing it Thursday night? Some people find them ugly. I have a couple and love the heft. Now you need to find a good hanger to go with it.
