    Police Bayonet

My Granddad just past down this Police Bayonet that my great uncle brought back with him from Germany. My Granddad got it from his wife who for many years used it to poke the fire in the living room! It has no scabbard and the police symbol has been prised out. Does any one know of any dealers that may have the parts I’m looking for? Also can anyone help with the markings on it please..

Its Marked S.U.P then what looks like a roman numeral 2 all of which have been over stamped with x's then a 39. Stamp that looks to be done later.

    Many thanks.

      Chris

I have a feeling that the marking is S. Op. II.39.

If so, this would be Schutzpolizei Oppeln (a town in Upper Silesia)

The "II" is a subdivisional designation.

"39" is the individual weapon number.

This information comes from a recent (and highly regarded book) History Writ In Steel: German Police Markings 1900-36 by Don Maus.

He does not list a "S. Up." as a recognised marking.

It looks to me as if the top of the letter "O" is stamped very close to the edge of the crossguard possibly combined with a little wear makes it look like the letter "U".

Parts - don't know I'm afraid, hopefullly someone else will.

Looks in pretty good condition for something which has been used as a poker.

      Regards

      Richie

Now that you mention it th U has no tail so an O makes sence.

If you are looking for a scabbard and frog, non-matching of course, there is one currently listed on eBay...I think the auction is still live. Might be work checking out. And yes it should be "Op"
Interested in the Gendarmerie - Schutzpolizei - Gemeinden - Feuerschutzpolizei - Wasserschutzpolizei - Etc. Looking For Anything Polizei Related!

                Hey Horst,

Good to see you here. I think this is the auction that was initially mentioned. It was for a 13" blade version & sadly it's ended already. Sold for $160 & had a decent frog as well. Had I needed one I would have been all over it.
