Not a General IMO - I have seen these golden toned scabbard bands before they are just a variation. Nice Holler crossguard.

Seen in other images, but perhaps best visualized with posting # 4. The gold tone fittings on the hangers are the result of a process that some makers used to combat a specific type of corrosion on zinc and zinc plating. With a layer of zinc chromate interposed between the zinc plating over the base metal, and zinc phosphate which was the final exterior finish.
As for the scabbard and the bands. With posting # 13 I can see what looks like rust on the side of the scabbard. And if you look closely at the rings with posting # 4 you can see where all of the finish has been worn off or removed, exposing bare steel, and the brass brazing material that was used to connect the ends. Being a fairly close color match to the bands, which I suspect are also brass, with whatever finish might have been on them also missing. FP

I took this shot prior to oiling the blade. I noticd on the one that started the thread, that the hanger lugs don't seem to match the scabbards condition. Usually they seem to match ...so could those lugs have been replaced ?(I haven't given up yet)Last edited by juoneen; 03-31-2010, 12:36 AM.
