I'm writing this without looking at any reference material, so go easy on me; but generally:
Those rifles and their bayonets with the "S" code ( denoting sitengwehr" or "sidearm" ) were produced when Germany first began to rearm, ca. 1934-36. When it became obvious they weren't going to be interfered with/punished by the Allied powers for doing so, manufacturers began marking their products openly with names, dates, and logos. I have a similar "mismatch" "S" series, both scabbard & bayonet dated 1936. I also have a matching "Mundlos" dated 1938; interestingly, Mundlos was known as a pre-war maker of SEWING MACHINES!
With the entry of Germany into a full war-time footing in 1940-41 the familliar ( usually ) 3-letter codes were adopted to "disguise" the manufacturer of just about all munitions, weapons, etc. to hopefully protect them from air raids: "byf", "cof", "bcd", etc., etc. ( It didn't work! ) Following the first disaster in Russia during the winter of 1941-42 and when it became obvious the war would be long indeed the numerical code of "RBNumbers" was adopted for many things; not guns or bayonets, though.Last edited by James N.; 12-20-2009, 02:31 PM.
