The blade has been polished but not TOO hard and the scabbard looks like a non period paint...but it may be period, I can't tell from the pictures.

Overall, I think it's a nice dagger and scabbard. I would not like one so polished, but better that than rusty and pitted and such.

Nice fittings all around. Correct maker mark!

it will surely affect the value. It looks like all crossgrain is gone also the motto darkening. THe scabbard seems to have new blue(?) repaint

Typical example of E.P.& S. dagger. I like this popular producer because of very high quality and easy to recognize features like grip shape and motto lettering. I'm not sure if paint on the scabbard is original or not, because in case of early NSKK daggers there are NO "original" i.e. factory painted scabbards. As everyone knows, early NSKK dagger scabbards are ex-brown SA scabbards painted black in 1936 (Korpsführer Hühnlein's order) by their owners - NSKK men. Some of them made it very rough with thick brush, some of them sprayed the paint very proffesional, some bought black SS scabbards (that not always fitted well enough). Well, I don't want to go too much into details. If someone is interested, buy the books on the subject, like Ralf Siegert's book that is already available in English
It's a pity that blade of your dagger was buffed or polished. The whole dagger is way too overcleaned for my taste, but some like it this way. Nevertheless it's original dagger by one of the premium makers.

I agree with the other opinions...too bad.....did you do this when you knew less to make it look shinier, or was it someone else you bought it from ? (few will admit when they have bolo'd in fron of other collectors out of embarrassment)

Daggers are worth 95% of full value even with finger prints if left uncleaned, and just oiled, but as soon as you try and make something old look new, Its the most critical mistake.

Like the one big ss dagger collector who tunes all his up to remove the drag lines, and as a result removes the grind marks from the stone that gives the blade the correct finish to pass final inpection .

Now they are being replaced , and others are getting stuck with those buffed examples, and the guys is trying to get them re ground to put the marks back on...or upgrade, and many think the guys the shiznick...the polished blades even if done with simichrome or some other crap.. do not look the same as factory, and theres a guy that does it professionally i wont name, so dont ask. I dont patronize those people that mess with stuff.

Hope you didnt buff this one , as it looks like it was done on a buffing wheel with rouge.

I knew a guy that found a perfectly good 33, and sent it to the local gunsmith to have the few pitts rouged out,and ruined it for a 20.00 charge by the gunsmith.

Nice cross guard mark anyway. Dealers wont like my following suggestion , but here goes anyway :

ONLY ...Buy them left alone, OR dont buy them at all, there are still many coming out of the woodwork, that have NOT been screwed with.

Save your money till you find one like that, you will be happier in the long haul , then you wont be as tempted to resell right away , and tend to keep the better stuff for decades....as many foolish collectors , upgrade after they learned they paid too much, and it was because they didnt know the rule .. and someone else stung a newbys with their overpriced mistakes.

I knock off at least 50% on any buffed or fooled with daggers of any kind. (This suggestions for newcomers, as old timers already know this , hopefully this tip will save a few daggers, and collectors alike...)
