Hitler Youth Knife

The story:

About 7 years ago when I was 14 or so, I went to the flea market with my mother and father. I saw this knife and recognized it. The Gentleman wanted less then 50 dollars so I of course asked the mother and father for the money and purchased the knife.

Now I just wanted to make sure it was real, and hopefully the numbering and makers mark are all ok. Also if the knife is real, could you give me a ballpark estimate on value? I know the condition isn't really the best, but for 25 dollars I couldn't go wrong.

Sorry to say, this is a postwar knife. The maker mark is Pic, Solingen, Germany, often seen with the same numbers on the obverse ricasso. Not a genuine Third Reich item.

Here's a photo of the makers mark. These knives are usually seen with the fleur-de-lis diamonds, but these are often replaced with fake HJ diamonds.

I agree with Russ. The word "Germany" is always a big red flag. Only in books published during the Third Reich period a few English words are normal.

Hi Chris,

I bought, exactly, the same knife years ago when I went to a flea market in Germany. I too had to borrow money of my parents.You feel bad when you discover years later that it was wrong! go onto the website, lakeside Trader. It will give you good tips in what to look for in choosing an original HJ boys knife. Its all part of the learning process. Buy yourself a nice one and it will be a good investment.

Chris sorry but the guys are correct its a post war hj knife, but at least it only cost $25 so no big loss.

Thanks all, another red flag for me was the actual Logo with the swastika. The red is a solid red as opposed to the sparkly (for lack of a better word) red that was found on the originals.

Oh well, guess it goes into the junk pile. I really appreciate all the responses.

Hi Chris,

Because you are prepared to learn:

There are genuine pieces with opaque red enamel in the diamond. But they are rarly found. In most cases it is transparent red enamel like you just figured out. The stippling beneath is formed by an upraised relief in the copper alloy underneath the enamel.
