    Kirk,I don't think the scabbard has been shortened. The blade looks like a replacement, ground from a sword blade. I may be wrong on this, but the grind, etching and MM look similar to that seen on imperial swords. I have attached a photo of a piece I own, it has some features in common with yours. This is a file photo, and does not show the blade. If you are interested, I can photograph and post the blade of mine (it is not marked).

      wolfeknives;Thanks for the pictures and your ideas.The antique dealer that I purchased this piece from ,was told that the original owner shortened the blade and scabard to fit into his knap sack.Who knows if this is true or not.The blade looks original to the piece to me, but I could be wrong.I still think it is a very old,nice ,unusual,rare,piece.

        I have a person at our antique mall very interisted in my Imperial Hirschfanger.Anyone have an idea of a fair retail price for my piece?
