Opinion on Police Dagger

Police bayonet

John,

What you show in the pictures is a Third Reich Police Bayonet. This bayonet was modified and shortened from a long model bayonet with clam shell to fit TR regulations. The blade was shortened and the clam shell guard was removed. the final addition was the TR police insignia added to the grip.

The markings S.W.II. 230 are interpreted inthe following manner. S. indicates Schutzpolizei or Municipal police. The W. is for the 29th Administrative District Wiesbaden. The II. is for the second duty station. And finally 230 is the weapon number.

The markings should be the matching on the bayonet and the scabbard.

Obviously the Paul Weyersberg TM on the blade is the maker's mark.

Looks to be a fairly nice bayonet.

Police Dagger

Tony,
Thanks for your input on this. Unfortunately I don't have the scabbard.
I could probably find a replacement scabbard but obviously not with
matching numbers. Is it common to find these bayonets modified?
Would you think it was period modified or modified later?
I've had the piece for at least 15 years and the friend I got it from had it since he was a kid which would have gone back to about 1964 or 1965.

Many of the earlier bayonets were modified to conform to the new police regulations instituted during the Third Reich. These mods were definately period done when they were converted from Wiemar to TR grip insignia and length specs.

The later TR produced police bayonet was already at the new regulation length and with the then current government's insignia installed at the time of manufacture. There was no need to modify these later bayonets. These later bayonets are somewhat scarce and usually made of lesser materials than the older ones. Instead of nickle silver or plated brass hilts the later ones were of a zinc based material or on rare occasions aluminum was used.

Too bad you're missing the scabbard but many times the numbers are mismatched on some examples.
