I believe that is an Army knot

Yes, it is an army portepee used many times on the K98 dress bayonet.

Do you know of an on-line reference for WWII German Bayonet Knots? I have Brain Davis book "German Army Uniforms & Insignia 1933-45" that has a small section on bayonet knots but it is lacking.
