    Chained SS discussion

    Hello all,

So this one is on the site and I wanted to know what you think of it. Is it a good investment, all completely original and together, and if it is fairly priced?

    Thank you.

grips a little battered but price reflects it, about 2700 uk, about right for condition, these wont get any cheaper in years to come.

Hi William, here is my 2p on the dagger.

Personally, the group marked crossguard would put me off. I don't know if there is any truth to him saying about them being found on early daggers? But I would not want one.

It looks a bit overcleaned to me too.

Price? I have seen nice SS chained daggers on the E Stand at better prices.

      Cheers, Ade.

I agree, you'll find yourself having to explain away the Gruppe marking on the crossguard at every turn - especially when the time comes to sell.

            Hello again,

I appreciate your input and opinions; I'll keep my eyes open for one on the e-stand.

              Hello !

Don´t worry ´bout the group mark.

Fellow collector´s told me, this is not a sign for a fake.

I also own a Chained dagger with a group-mark on the crossguard, (Wm).

The dagger actually was found in the household of a died former member of the SS.

              Regards, Reibert

                William,

I think the price matches the condition although aesthetically a chewed up grip bothers me somewhat.

I think the advice you've already received regarding originality is sound. Whether or not a gruppe marked crossguard is original or not isn't the question, the question is will you have trouble selling it in the future in the even you feel you have to or need to. The answer is you'll have more trouble because some may think the crossguards were swapped with an early SA. For the money, you will likely find something more pleasing right here on the estand. Good luck.

                    Stu,

While I appreciate the offer, we chatted about this one months ago

You guys know I'm an award fella but this is far superior to having the RK in a case . . .

Just looking for the right price, and I have no problem waiting.

                        Hello all,

I know this one is original and will have an inspection period. This came back from a Vet and is a buddy at work who has it. Now, with knowing that....

What do I look for in a chained SS dagger when I first get it. Is there anything I need to take apart?

Please let me know either way. Thank you.

Do not take anything apart and post photos for opinions.

There is some good advice here when it comes to time to sell or upgrade. The dagger posted has early nickel silver SA crossguards “married” to a later SS M1936 (nickel plated steel) chain mounted scabbard. If you look closely at the images - in the second from the bottom image there is a fairly noticeable gap between the upper mount and crossguard at the ends.

And the pieces of the grip which are missing almost certainly got broken off when someone tried to force fit the nickel silver mounts to try and make them fit better. As replacements for the (undoubtedly rusted) original nickel plated malleable iron crossguards.

There is also more good advice when it comes to disassembling daggers just for an opinion - which is how many get damaged. Post the pictures first ‘as is’. And go from there as the situation dictates. FP

The dagger in the OP cannot be conclusively dismissed because of the photos. It is COMMON to find type I SS 36's with solid nickel hilt fittings and plated chain and scabbard fitiings. Some of these have gau marks and for the most part they are period and correct. In fact, I have seen more type I's with solid nickel hilt fittings than plated fittings. The type I is probably the earliest produced variety after the initial early solid nickel type II's.
