    Dallas gun show purchase

Not a bad show so far snagged a nice Naval dagger and a single engraved short bayonet, the bayonet had an obviously incorrect sword portepee on it and when I removed it I saw about half an inch of the black plastic grip was broken off that I didnt notice before,,,aggravating, then I notice how heavy and metallic the portepee is with very nice gold bullion wire, warm to the touch, and in overall great shape,,,can someone tell me if this is a high ranking portepee or a nice Naval sword or what,,,extremely detailed in construction. Extra photos on request. Thanks

        Steve,

Your knot is for the US Navy Officer sword.

              Hmm

If there is one thing I would not do, it would be to replace the grip-plates. Note that they were made to fit that given bayonet, manufacturer. Although they are interchangeable, you may notice spaces there that do not look nice. Therefore, if it is just loose, I would not remove it! Besides, collectors will not buy bayos with replaced grip plates because it is likely they were tampered with. I would leave it as it is. Just my opinion...

                Steve,
Sorry to hear your bayo has a broken grip plate. I also have a etched bayo with a broken grip plate. I have left it as found so far. Sometime later I may change it. The Dallas show you spoke about, was that at Big Town last weekend? I was going to go but I got tied up. If you're interested in the future, email me and we'll meet at Market Hall or Big Town. I rarely do Ft. Worth anymore.
                Best regards, Steve.
