Luttwaffe 2nd Model Dagger & box – Opinions & Appraisal Please

I don’t doubt the authenticity of this dagger and box. The dagger’s original owner’s son (himself an ex-Gebirgsjager Lt.) gave it to me along with his Wehrmacht uniform and other items. The dagger’s owner was a pilot-observer in the Bavarian Air Force in WW I and a reserve Luftwaffe Colonel during WW II.

My questions: Is the aluminum bullion portepee tassel correct and properly attached? Does everything else look correct? The dagger went to school with the grandson for “show and tell” when he was young. He may have taken it apart and reassembled it a time or two. Also, there were four other knots in the box when I received it: a Faustriemen, an NCO Troddle, a sword portepee, and what looks like an aluminum bullion portepee with a very short cord. Three of the four are in mint condition. I think these all belonged to the son, but the short portepee might have gone with this dagger. Any opinions about the present configuration?

Finally, I have not collected German militaria for 20+ years so I am very out of date on values. I need an estimated current market value for this dagger and box. I know Paul Weyersberg Company daggers are fairly common, but how many are in their original box and have their history too? What does that add to its value? Any estimates? Thanks for your help.

One final addition... Here is a picture of the dagger owner’s original ribbon bar that he wore during WW II. Most of the awards date to WW I. Maybe identifying these ribbons will tell more about his military career, but I have had problems identifying them. Can you tell me what they are?

                    2nd Luftwaffe Rig

                    Hi Michael.

You have a very nice 2nd Luftwaffe Dagger Rig here (Dagger, Portapee and Hangers). It looks in fantastic condition and the addition of the box finishes it beautifully. I cannot state the originallity of the box as I do not know but the dagger looks fine.

The knot looks to bo correct . It should wrapped twice around the bottom of the grip and hang down to the left of the Eagle as you look at the front .

You may be able to pick up a genuine replacement screw for the scabbard from Tom Johnson Militaria. I have looked now but there are none for sale at present but you could drop him an email to see if he can help.

As for value its always a case of how much is someone prepared to pay but I would give an estimate between $750 to $1000 , but thats just my opinion. Could be more or less.

                    Hope this helps.

                    Best wishes.

                    Ian

I agree that a price in the $700.00 range would be reasonable for the dagger. If the box is original, it could be worh another $500.00 or so.

                      Nica dagger, BTW

                        Ian and Skip,
Thanks for the information about the dagger and the estimated value. Both are very helpful.
