        Hi MAL,
While 1196/38 SS is listed as a valid code, the RZM circle is wrong from what I can see. I cant find anything with the same trademark as shown here in any reference.

You only asked about the trademark, But some of the other parts look a little miss-matched. I wouldnt want that dagger in my collection. I would save my money for a better example.

          Thanks Eric

The price is right but it is the makers mark that worried me, I have found one similar but the circle goes completely round the RZM and not brakes at the legs of the M.
I would like to now for sure before I part with any money.

Have take a second look. It could be a parts-dagger. Not always that easy to see just from pictures alone. There is much variation in the patina on the fittings. If you have your doubts, don't buy it! SS daggers are to expensive to make any mistake.

Yes, I would also wait for a better more easily-authenticated example. I also don't like some of the inconsistent patina, and the way the top of the wood of the handle doesn't fit well against middle end of the upper crossguard. I also think that suggests a possibility that it could be a parts dagger. Of course, I don't know what the price of this dagger is, but I also wouldn't take a chance spending even the typical SS-Dagger price for this one. If you look around, there will, of course, be many other unquestionable examples to choose from. That's just my opinion.

Given the strange fitting of the top grip to the crossguard, mis-matched patina, The idea that it seems as if the scabbard has plated fittings as opposed to the dagger itself with nickel-silver fittings (though this config id not impossible) I would say it is a parts dagger.

Thanks for all your help and advice, if you could have this for £750 would it still be worth it even tough a parts dagger.

I got the same photos and posted them on the German Daggers forum where the opinion was it was parts and the blade might be a repo , Rob

1196/38 SS should have plated fittings on both scabbard and upper and lower crossguards. The grip eagle should be aluminum. The scabbard should be painted. The blade rzm / makers mark on the dagger in question looks bad to me. At best it is a parts dagger with a fake blade and you can take that to the bank. I have several mint examples of the 1196/38SS.

Is there something wrong with my computer, or did the pictures of this dagger disappear? I almost seems that for the purposes of future reference all pictures submitted for evaluation should be left in the thread, or else it becomes nearly impossible to use the thread for any real reference in the future. Oh well, that's just my opinion.

Maybe there really is just something wrong with my computer...
