K98 Bayonet + frog

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of adding a bayonet to my collection, a new area for me. I came across this one and I was looking for some views. What are the important things to look for if you are looking to buy a bayonet & frog.

Well

I am a beginner myself. What you have here is not a K98 bayonet but rather a KS98 Mauser Bayonet, or often just called a Dress Bayonet. There are not that many fakes around, so there is not that much to worry about. One thing to always look for is poor fits of the grips and seams on the finger guards for example. The ones with some etch patterns are more tricky however. I suggest you get a book to guide you through or post the items of your interest here and we would be more than happy to help you.

As to the piece on display, it's a nice one, but I would personally wait and get one with better plating on the hilt and finger guards. Other than that, a very nice piece.

Thanks very much for the information. So this bayonet would never have been attached to a rifle, it was worn with a dress uniform as a kind of dress dagger (or bayonet in this case). Were these private purchase items?

well they were generally worn on the side, as a dress accessory. However, some could be put on rifles and I have seen photos of that. However, they were not used for combat and YES, they were private purchase items. That would explain the different variations and etch patters. Such changes were not allowed for issued K98 bayonets as those were owned by the state.

I agree with Jan, the piece in question is nice enough (maker marked by Pack and having spanner nuts for the grips) but the plating on the pommel leaves a lot to be desired. These pieces are pretty plentiful, just be patient and you'll find one that will look like new with all the attributes of this piece. Just my opinion but I think with time you'll agree.
