    A sawback K98?

    Hey guys,

is it possible that a K98 had a sawback, originally from the factory? I have come across this K98 and all looks good. However, I have a problem with the fact that from what I know, no such alterations were allowed. What's your take on that?

    Here's the link: http://www.aukro.cz/item190365367_10...t_sawback.html

I've got one these bayonets; I believe same maker. It has no providence, and I got it at a local auction in 1986.

It looks correctly made; the blade work looks like it was done at time of manufacture. But I'll wait to see what the blade experts have to say. s/f Robert

That'a a WW1 sawback 98 bayonet. Of course they existed. Try looking in a bayonet reference book like Janzens's...Tom

This appears to be an original WWI S84/98. Quite legitimate with a saw back. The WWII bayonets of this type with sawbacks are the ones that are usually faked.

legitimate 2nd model 84/98 by Deutsche Maschinenfabrik with a blade supplied by Gottlieb Hammesfahr.I am not sure of the reason for so many makers of the 2nd model 84/98 used blades from other makers when they made blades themselves.Nice bayo

              Scott,

Your bayonet is an entirely different model than the one under discussion. The bayonet that Jan asked about is a S84/98. It is an item of issue bayonet. The one that you show is a KS98. It is a private purchase bayonet.

While your bayonet is very nice it is only related to the first bayonet by them both being from the Imperial time period. Jan's question asked about "A sawback K98" and there is no such thing as a K98 bayonet. It is like comparing a NS Zeit Heer officer dagger to a RAD enlisted dagger or a Luftwaffe sword to a Heer cavalry saber.

SCHUPO, thanks for the info. I removed my last post to prevent confusion.
