I just received this beautiful Police Dagger from a member on e-stand. Both the dagger and scabbard have the same unit markings S.M.IV.1472, can someone translate these numbers for me. On the rib of the blade is a "B". The overall length of the dagger is 17 3/8" and the blade is 13". The maker marked both sides of the blade, on the emblem side is ACS with scales, and on the other side "Alexander Coppel over scales and Solingen under the scales. If you look at the cleaning hole in the handle on the back side it looks like a red dirt fills the hole.

Your markings on the crossguard indicate this bayonet was issued to the Schutzpolizei of M******252;nster, Precinct IV, Weapon # 1472. The Star/B marking is a Prussian Police marking that has nothing to do with Berlin but the B indicates the responsible Police Weapons Inspector. The holes in the grip are not clean-out holes (as are found on S84/98) but are where the original rivets were in the grip during the time of the Weimar Republic. These bayonets were officially refurbished during the NS Zeit and the blades and hilts were shortened when the clamshells were removed. The material in the hole is the original putty used by the police armorers to camouflage the holes left in the grips when the refurb was finished.
I hope this information is helpful.
