another out of the woodwork - Gustav Spitzer

    Hello,

Here is the other Luftwaffe dagger as found in Flanders (see also : http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=201626)

This one is maker marked: C.Gustav Spitzer - Solingen.

This dagger also has the hanger (no parts missing).

    All opinions are welcome.

    Cordial greetings,

The Spitzer trade mark is not common on Luftwaffe daggers. You have found a rare bird! A nice dagger that has lost it's black contrasting on the fittings and scabbard and also lost it's grip wire. The grip wire can be replaced. Men like T. Jhonson have those things for sale. The few Spitzers that I have on picture have a twisted brass wire instead of the usual alumnium.

            thank you,

            Hello Theo,

Thank you for the reply => it is always fun to hear that it is good one and for certain iff it is not a common one

You are correct about the grip wire, there was still a remnant (approx. 1 cm long) inside the grip. And it is a twisted (copper?) 2 wire copper. Will scan it and add a picture of it.

These daggers are recuperated from the area arround the airfield of Ursel

              more opinions?

              Hello,

Are there more opinions on this one?, is a Spitzer indeed hard to find?, is the hanger consistent with the rest of the dagger etc ...

Who can tell me something more about the history of the Gustav Spitzer company?

What does such one normally cost (comes in handy iff i ever decide to let it go )

              Cordial greetings,

I agree with Theo that's a tough one to find. I'm not convinced the black finish is missing. Not all 2nd lufts were darkened. I'm wondering if that surface is factory laquered? I can't tell by the pics but maybe...
Regardless Sir you have a nice find that looks 100% right to me.
                I'm happy for you.

I agree with Paul that the finish was never dark on this dagger. It looks to have the later wartime satin frosted finish nickel plate on the scabbard and possibly the hilt fittings. I have an army dagger by Fridericus with the same finish.

The wire isn't too difficult to replace. PM me if you need any.

                  Nice looker!

                    Spitzer

                    Hello,

Thank you both for the reply, the scabbard did indeed never have the black paint. It is a frosted satin paint and im quite sure that it has not been repainted. So probably one of the very late pieces by this company?

I like it very much, i will send you a PM for that wire arround the grip. It needs to be as complete as possible.

Anyone a idea iff the Spitzer company has a tracable history?
