Short Fireman's Dress Bayo - Value and Opinion

Hello guys,

I want to buy a short dress fireman's bayo to add to my new collection. I have come across this nice example. However, the scabbard retains what I would estimate to be 40% of the original paint. The blade looks like it's in very good condition, all in order. The crossguards seem a bit less good, but still nice. I am asking whether it would be a good one to get since it's a nice short version of the one I already have from the same manufacturer? I would like to know the approximate value so that I do not overspend on it. Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether you're buying from a dealer or on the open marked or Eban. A dealer would get at least $140-$150 for that piece, probably more. Open market, maybe $125 or so.

If you're looking for "just one" representative piece for your collection, I'd suggest you pass on this one for a better example. The scabbard paint is beat pretty well, looks like there's some rust too. While the blade looks decent, the plate loss on the crossguard indicates the piece is probably mid to late war production.

H******246;rster is a pretty common maker too. I'd say you can find a better conditioned piece on the market. And quite possibly for less than this one is going for, depending on what the asking price if of course.

Thanks for your feedback. I think that the bayo will sell for about 60-100 USD max. That's the price these tend to go for. It's hard letting things pass when I do not come across such often. I could always sell it later I guess if I find a better replacement. If it were not for the state of the scabbard, it would be a great piece. I will wait then. Thanks again,
