    Early Alcoso Army. Help please.

    Hello everyone,

I'm trying to learn what is meant when collectors use the expression "slant grip" in reference to early Army daggers. Here are photos of an Alcoso that I've posted before. At the time people indicated it was an early dagger. Does it have a slant grip? Is the "slant" the pitch of the grooves or something else?

Finally, how much do early features add to an Army dagger's value?

    Thanks,

    Harvey

slants grooves are more at angle than most!

Type in slant grips in old threads here or at GD forum!

Many have been posted by Denny!

He shows many in his army thread just posted!

            Hi Harvey,
The "slant" is a reference to the steeper angle of the grooves in the grip.

I have noticed that the many of the "slant" grips also have thinner segments.

I wish I had an Army dagger in my collection to show this detail.

Also, Your crossguard apears to be the frist production type made by Alcoso.

From my angle, it looks like the crossguard is the 1st type Alcoso. Grip is not a slant as you already know. The "so-called" slant grip is the type 1 where the spirals are angled upward more than either the type 2 or 3. (Grab a book and see the difference immmediately.)

We do find early blades w/Tapered tangs and 1st style fittings mated to later grips. Grip Could have been used as part of remaining stock on hand or replaced later. I wouldn't be concerned unless the grip shows signs of being altered to fit it's new surroundings......

That Alcoso mark is Very hard to find........ Nice looking dagger.....
