    SS Dagger School

I went to a guys house last night to look at militaria that he is willing to sell me. He claimed to have bought most of his stuff in the 1970s and 1980s.

Germanwise, there was good and bad (in my opinion). He must have been someones sugar daddy because he had no books on the stuff and plenty of high dollar items that you do not find at flea markets and garage sales. All of his SS cloth had issues (in my opinion), but his daggers didn't raise any immediate flags. I am not an expert though.

My question is what are some good, online sources/sites for me to brush up on German daggers, particularly SS?

The guy has 3 Army Officers, 1 second pattern luft officer, several SA, some other odd balls, an HJ, and 4 later SS daggers.

The SS daggers all appear to be late war because they have plated crossguards, and no maker... just RZM codes. What are some tell tale signs to look for on this era dagger?

    Thanks.

If I were you, I would get some photos of anything that you're thinking about purchasing from this guy and post them here.

At least we could all give you some very quick responses.

That would be quite a few photos, but that is probably what I'll do. I told him that I did not collect SS, but that I had concerns about his SS pennants and his SS officer O/S cap. He let me take pics of them because I said I would show them to some people and let him know the consensus.

I would have taken more pics, but I bought this new digital camera and the memory card only lets me store 5 or 6 images! What a joke. Now I have to go buy a card with more memory before I go back to this guy's place again!

Yes, the memory cards with new cameras don't allow much information space. However, you'll probably find that your camera is set to the highest resolution settings, so if you drop them down, you should be able to take more photos with the memory card that they provided you with.

Take the photos and post them here. Doesn't matter if there's a lot of photos, we're all here to help our fellow collectors/members. You may have the opportunity to buy some great items but you may also might be being offered some absolute rubbish.

Books are great but you'll receive quicker answers here.

A word of caution, be very lerry of Rohm inscription daggers.

There have been many genuine daggers that have post war Rohm inscriptions added to them.
Some are pretty bad, but a few are done well enough that you really have to be an expert to spot them.

I don't think reference books do that much for you. If you have all the reference books in the world but yet, have never handled a real SS dagger, most likely you'd still be lost.

There is no substitute for experience.

Hello. It's ironic that a site you recommended as being good has problems distinguishing authentic Rohm inscriptions.

                    Hello Wizard:

Yes, I had read about that very thing on another forum.
That was why I made the word of warning about the Rohms in general.
It would seem that even the experts can't agree on many of those Rohm pieces.
I thought that I had made that clear.
I suggested that link as a reference on the more common daggers.
The armies, lufts, and so forth.
Please forgive me if I have misled anyone.

Hello Daggerob. Well, I think it is only THIS "expert" that can't agree and this is the SECOND time that happened to him with a Rohm (that I know about). Best.

It makes you wonder doesn't it?
