It appears to me that the quilion has been broken off and been repaired on the knife on the right. I'm not aware of any makers who made the knife without the quilion but I stand to be corrected.

yes larry i am of the same conclusion if it where a baynet then i could under stand as it would be cought on barbed wire ect ect but to me it looks to be a broken guard that has been repaired and maybe filed down,in later years i have no idea thanks for all you comments
