I will now give the 'story' with the blade as its most interesting. A New Zealand merchant seaman was in Kiel in 1945 (at wars end) and pulled a girl who was drowning out of the Kiel canal (probably a suicide attempt) any way later the next day he was tracked down in a pub by a local official and asked to see him the next day at his office. Upon arriving he was told that the girl had been his only surviving relative and as a show of gratitude presented him with the dagger. The story is also documented in a local publication etc. We all know about 'stories etc' But i like it. The dagger was a very fair price plus I believe it, better than taken from a U Boat commander etc.

Thanks for everyones help with this dagger.

      Mike

Professional collectors say "buy the item, not the story". I like the stories and that's a good one.

Especially if the price reflects the story! My Scots ancestry leads me away from such situations.

            Hi Mike

It looks like they may have used brasso to clean it going by the white down in the grooves. Would not be too good for the original guilding but yes it is a nice dagger. If your ever interested in selling or swapping let me know.

The dagger guys are much more forth coming and helpfull than the helmet chaps aren't they.

Hows Wellington. Was up there for the big jewellery expo in June. Fantastic town.
