    What is this?

Besides telling me it is a Fusprech a 1 , can anyone tell me what this is and what it was used for? For it to be a radio, I think there should be more to it.

It is on Ebay right now but I am not the seller nor am I going to bid on it.

It's a part of an early and very rare backpack transceiver.

I guess that would explain the opening bid of $950!

The Fuspr.a1 (later also called Feldfu.a) is the "prototype" for the Feldfunksprechers. It essentially has a similar circuit to the later Feldfu b and c, but it was equipped with 2 V valves (including the rare SD1A) and it lacks the vibrating HT supply of the later Feldfu's. It is fed from the half size 2B19 battery and a 90V HT battery. It comes in a relatively fragile metal casing and does not have the Feldfu's remote control feature yet. Here's a comparison with a Feldfu:

Note the "upside down" voltage instrument, which was unique to the Fuspr.a1 and will probably be difficult to find.

        Happy hunting!

Except space, haha! I do have quite a bit, but there is plenty I don't have. I think it would be impossible to collect every type of radio equipment, the huge variety, rarity, funds and space required makes that an impossibility. I know one Austrian collector who ended up with 30 Tons of equipment and still has gaps in his collection! So I do focus on things that I have a hope of completing, my particular passion being the relatively compact portable and vehicle mounted equipment. Still gaps there too!
