Maschinenr. smells of Maschinenraum , i.e. engine room. Looks like a ship phone.

I can’t confirm this - all my radio station lamps have BA15d sockets...
Otherwise I also can only guess the origin of the phone. Obviously meant to be rough environment usage.

DIN 49721 is a typical socket for low voltage lamps as they been used in place where movements and vibrancy could cause bad contact (lamps in cars, ships, planes, machines, tools etc)
In Countries like UK, Ireland, US and France they are also in use for electric illumination purposes in households, while here in Germany Edison sockets (E22/E14) are standard.
So the likeliness of the fact that this socket built in a Siemens & Halske Phone from 1939 is coming from France is IMHO rather low, but of course not impossible.

Investigating around the type I tent to believe that the phone could also been used in a mine.
Do a google search for „ siemens & halske grubentelefon“... I could not find the one posted but pretty similar ones...
by the way - London towerbridge machine room - there you find a Siemens and Halske Telephone as well ;-)
