I hope this contributes to the discussion and not derail it, but here's another SS turned army that I got a few years back.

Very interesting cap that started the discussion, and thanks for posting it.

          Nice caps guys!

Jacques, any pasteboard left in that one?, looks like it was completely removed!

Btw, I found this thread on the axishistory forum in regards to Officers transferring from the Heer to the SS, the info posted by Charles Trang is interesting.

          http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=181404

          In particular:

"In most cases, SS officers left the Waffen-SS because they had problems with the SS administration. SS-Ostubaf. von Hengl, for instance, had an argument with Himmler. I must point out that the SS-Officers who were transferred to the Heer were former Heer officers so no peculiar procedures had to be taken."

Absolutely - this is a standard SS visor that had a wreath and army eagle added, but they left the black band uncovered.

It doesn't make much sense to convert an SS to army in light of comparative collector rarity of 2017, but in 1942-43 it must have made good sense in terms of repurposing and extending the life of a serviceable cap.
