    Police black side cap, panzer(?)

    This is an interesting use of a side cap (feldmutze) for Police. It is a black 'overseas' cap which has a cloth police badge hand sewn to the front. Above the police badge there is an attached metal panzer skull.
    This skull has been sewn into the position as it has lost it's metal prong.

    Ground dug alu skull with some oxydation ?
    Recently sewn on to do a more commercial side cap ?

              These "rosette" bottom eagles have been debated on more than one occasion. Some, like my colleague Doug, feel that they are fake. That said I have never seen any proof offered one way or the other. There are many opinions, and it seems that the argument for them being fake is the strange rosette at the bottom rather than the usual X, nothing more. Unless someone is aware of these being sold as fakes I am open to their being an original variation. I have seen too many weird police insignia dismissed as fake which turned out to be real. Take the three feathered sleeve Eagles as an example.

              As far as the cap is concerned, the authorized panzer cap was green piped. It would be impossible to prove unpiped caps were never used. That said, black caps were used by the fire department, so without provenience it is just impossible to say how this cap was used, assuming the police insignia to be authentic.

                Ah, with that photo I personally would not dismiss it out of hand. I think a faker might be more inclined to sell the cap as SS rather than police. I cant say that I like the skull, but as mentioned I have seen stranger police items.

                Of course black SS uniforms and caps were issued to Ukrainian and other Eastern "auxiliaries" so that is an additional, and more likely use.
