Makes me wonder if there is now a market for taking average condition caps and "rebuilding" them to create an SS or Generals visor, and selling it as such.

Sad to say, but there probably is....

Forgot to add that I don't think that Professioneller Umbau means a Professional Restoration or anything like that but perhaps our German forum members can clarify.

Whilst we are on the subject of restorations, I want to say something that will be on the record here for all to read.

A few days ago, a forum member sent me an incredibly insulting PM right out of the blue in regards to the restoration work on caps that I do for myself and my fellow collectors. I've had similar messages in the past and the usual rant is along the lines that I'm altering, modifying and in general, messing with original caps in an unscrupulous and dishonest manor just to screw unsuspecting collectors. I'm not going to name any names or try to explain what I do to these vicious trolls that have plagued me on this forum over the years, I'm done with that.

So from now on, I'm only going to offer my restoration skills to my trusted friends and no one else.

That pi$$es me off to no end, Ben--I am going to start a thread on this--this kind of incivility has been increasing exponentially over the past couple of years.

          Hallo Ben

Obviously those are people who do not understand the difference between a normal restoration to which nearly all military items shall be subjected because of their age and the creation of a fake. As I wrote some time ago: "the mother of the stupid is always pregnant" and then, to quote the great poet Dante: "do not care about them, but look and go" (Divine Comedy, Inferno, Canto III, verse 51).

Umbau does not mean restoration but rather conversion or alteration - so this word creation points clearly in the Frankenstein direction ...

World is full ignorants, how said Dante "do not care about them, but look and go" and reported Marcello.

I hope to be among your friends

                      Hallo sprachsfuehrer

You say: I see gray and more blue-gray than blue-green. Certainly from black & white shots it is not easy to determine the gradation of colors and just as certainly in the image n. 21 the visors’ bands appear very clear and we have to combine them with epaulets & insignia. Do you have any information about the name of the General in the foreground? If so, we might try to identify him completely on a directory and to have some further evidence of his function and especially to see if, as appears to me, there were no kriegsdauer equivalent to the rank of General. With regard to the image 22, currently on ebay, it was taken from farther away and it is for me very difficult to say something. I think that you refer to the official on the right in the foreground, with glasses and the clear lapels of the coat, described as Militärverwaltungs-Chef. If this description is correct, we should be able to identify him by name, and even the dark band of his cap would be justifiable. May you be able to do a photo enlargement with regard only to his half-bust? Finally, if the regulation of 1940 says that the color was blue-gray, surely this was the case and I have made a careless mistake.

                        Hallo Marcello!
                        Gruss
